Best Ways to Give an Outdated Home a Modern Vibe

Not many of us are fortunate enough to be able to afford a new home. With so many conveniently priced older houses on the market, it doesn’t come as a surprise that people choose to buy them instead. As convenient as they are to find and easy to afford, older homes come with their own set of problems. One of the most common issues people have with their outdated homes is how to make them more modern. If you’re hoping to update your old house and make it look a bit more contemporary, you’ve come to the right place.

Go white

A lot of older houses have wallpapers, and as lovely as they used to look decades ago, these days you could probably find a lot of better options. Even better, you should get rid of them and paint your walls white or something neutral. As a rule, older wallpapers start peeling and can get grimy, and once you start taking them off, you will probably notice that there are places that have mold underneath. Not a pretty sight at all. A wonderful way to make your old home look and feel new is to paint it white: we’re talking whitewashed walls and ceilings – one of the oldest tricks in the book. It’s easy, it’s cheap, and it will never go out of style.

Replace old doors

One of the best things about older homes is that they often have amazing doors and ornate cornices that a lot of contemporary homes are dying to get. If your front door is in good condition, try adding a fresh coat of paint and a new door handle just to spice things up. Interior doors, on the other hand, are a whole other story. If you’re hoping to keep the rustic air in your home, you should try getting sliding barn doors instead of keeping your old ones. Not only will they make your home interior seem at the same time rustic and modern, but you will also save a lot of floor space because these doors stick to the wall.

New hardware and outlets

Updating outdated hardware and outlets is another easy way to give new life to an old house, and you don’t even have to break the bank to do it. If you’re on a tight budget and don’t want to spend a fortune on updates, you should simply replace your old outlets with new ones. You could even try getting a uniformed look for your entire house so that every light switch, plate and outlet match. On the other hand, if you’re willing to spend a bit more, you could try replacing old outlets and getting new hardware too. It will have a great effect on your home, and you will finally have different door handles and taps than your Grandma.

Out with the old furniture

There is no way your home will feel modern if it’s filled with outdated furniture. Keeping a few select antique pieces is one thing, but keeping every wardrobe, cabinet, armchair, and coffee table is simply a bad move. Throw out your old furniture (try to sell it online or donate it to someone who might need it) and get some new pieces. You don’t even have to buy brand new furniture: you can easily get used one and update it with a lick of paint or a new wood stain. Old curtains in a freshly painted room with new furniture are also not a very good idea, so try getting some new ones that will brighten up the room.

When it comes to updating and redecorating an old house, there is no such thing as “too many ideas”. The best thing is that you won’t have to spend too much money on these updates and you’ll still be able to upgrade your home and make it look modern and elegant.
